TKGA Level I

Kathy and Linda,

Tuesday's mail brought my Level I packet! My knitting goal for Tuesday evening was to finish the sleeves of the sweater I have on the needles so I have done that but did take some time to look very briefly at the information. Today, Wednesday, I'll go shopping for a notebook and the clear pockets for my finished swatches.

What type of yarn are you using for your swatches? I am so excited! It's 2 A.M. and I am not sleepy.

Choc,

This is so great. It's got me excited about it again. I've got to stop starting other projects!

I've used cascade 220 on the swatches I've done so far, but I ordered and received a big skein from KnitPicks - just their basic Wool of the Andes (worsted weight) in an undyed off-white, which I also think will be good. I've done about 7 swatches , I think. Now I'll have to look at them with fresh eyes and see if I think they'll "Pass." We leave in a week for about 10 days. I probably won't get serious about this again until my return.

One more quick question:

What is the date on your packet? If the revised date hasn't changed since I received mine (yikes - 9 months ago!), then I don't have to worry so much. If it has, I have to follow the latest revision.

Thanks!

Kathy,

The date on the materials in my packet is 072705. I thought that you only had to get a new packet if you had had yours for over a year.

On TKGA's website, in the Master Knitters' area, the most recent dates for each packet packet are listed.

Enjoy your time away.

Choc,

You're right. I confess I was assuming that I won't be finished within a year. But my revision date is as current as yours, so I should be ok for awhile. I believe one's packet is good for AT LEAST a year, and after that until the requirements are updated.

Have you started?

I just looked over my 7 blocked swatches. They're pretty good, but I'm not sure if they're good enough. I might need to redo a few that are stockinette and show every little imperfection.

k.

Kathy,

I haven't started knitting. I have purchased a 2" notebook, a box of the clear sleeves and some yarn. I want to knit a chemo hat before I start to make sure I don't get carried away with trying to do it all in a hurry and don't do a good job.

I looked at the articles at TKGA for people working on their Master Knitter's certification and found out that I have a lot to learn about various techniques. But, the new ways will make me produce better knitted creations so that will be good.

It IS exciting. It's super to know that we are all working on our Masters Level I, now! Kathy, you sound like the furthest along, with seven swatches. I have to finish sewing up a few projects, then can get back to knitting swatches.

I'm using Galway. in off-white. I received my packet in December, so I've obviously been distracted/procrastinating. What I heard from knitters here is that when your year is coming around, just write to TKGA, and ask for a copy of the latest requirements, so that you're not sending the wrong thing after that. It sounds pretty easy to do.

One other thing I learned, is to make one swatch in one sitting. If you put it down and come back to it another day, your gauge will probably be just a little bit different, depending on whether you're a little more tired, or are a little tense after a long day, or are more relaxed!

Kathy, hope you have a good trip. I'll send my cap tomorrow. And maybe I can set a goal to knit another one, after doing a couple of swatches!

It's great to have the two of you doing this now. I definitely needed something to spur me on again.

You're absolutely right about finishing in one sitting, Linda. I think what happens to me is that the row that is sitting on the needles gets a little stretched out, and then that's apparent when the whole swatch is done.

My chemo cap is out of very smooth yarn and the same thing is happening there, but there's no way to do that in one sitting, so I'll either live with it, or hope it evens out with a wash.

I'm finishing up socks which I want to give to a friend in CA, and the chemo cap and then I WILL KNIT MORE SWATCHES!! (You are my witnesses.)

Take care-
